Choose how you move in Redditch are encouraging residents and employees to get on their bikes to fight off the seasonal blues from Monday, January 20, 2014 and take part in the Winter Redditch Cycle Challenge.

The date, believed by some to be 'Blue Monday' alleging it to be the most depressing day of the year, will launch the challenge in a bid to help participants shift any additional pounds gained over Christmas and restart the sustainable travel awareness as the Choose project rolls into its final 15 months.

Fiona Allen, Choose how you move officer for Worcestershire County Council, said: "The winter challenge aims to celebrate those dedicated, year-round cyclists as well as those newcomers who want to have a go. There are many days in winter where the weather doesn't necessarily restrict outdoor mobility and with the right gear, cycling can be very exhilarating."

Users of social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook are encouraged to help spread the word about the challenge, which is free to enter as an individual or as part of a team.

Prizes such as vouchers and cycling accessories are awarded for journeys and miles completed for commuting or leisure. There are also prizes for the best male and female cyclists, and the best blog of the week.
