Clee 18 Alcester 3

AN Alcester side who have been knocked out at the first stage of the national Vase competition in nine of the last ten seasons endured another disappointment on Saturday.

The visitors - given a first-round bye - were forced into eight changes from the side that beat Harbury and it proved critical as they lacked cohesion.

Their task was made more difficult when stand-in hooker Darren Stanton had to leave the field with a neck injury, leaving the visitors without a recognised number two.

Alcester were competitive in the first half without ever taking control, and at the break trailed 8-3, after a typical bazooka penalty from prop Matt Bolton, Clee claiming a try and penalty.

In the second half Alcester failed to capitalise on their opportunity to get something from the game, and conceded two further scores.

Alcester hope to welcome back most of the absentees for the critical league match at home to Southam on Saturday (ko 2.15pm).

Southam sit second, above their hosts on points difference and with a game in hand with both sides boasting three wins.

Alcester RFC once again host their annual bonfire and fireworks night on Friday at King's Coughton. Gates open from 7pm, with fireworks around 8pm.
