A GREAT day out for all the family will take place at the Stables Farmshop and Tearooms when it hosts Open Farm Sunday.

The Stables will be hosting a day of British food and farming at its 100 acre site at Astwood Bank. Starting at 10am and running through to 4pm, the day promises to be a fun-packed agricultural experience. Machinery demonstrations, tractor and trailer rides as well as sheep shearing, a series of talks, nature trails, easily marked farm walks and rare breed farm animals are among the many attractions on offer.

Open Farm Sunday is a national event organised by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming). A visit to a local farm such as The Stables is a great way to meet the farmers who grow the food the public consumes and see how they care for the countryside.

Part of the Old Yarr 350 acre estate, The Stables Farmshop and Tearooms is home to many rare breed animals including Jacob sheep, pygmy goats, hens, pigs and Hereford cattle as well as a herd of alpacas. Livestock raised on the farm is sold in the The Stables Butchery, offering the best prime locally reared British meat.

Old Yarr farm manager, Will Willison, said: “What we are hoping to demonstrate is the quality and excellence of British food and farming which continues to play an important role in local communities.

“Our Open Farm Sunday offers opportunity for families to enjoy the peace and beauty of rural living and is a must for anyone interested in food, farming or the countryside.”
