Last week, I had the privilege of meeting Chloe Bishop from Astwood Bank at Parliament. Chloe is a Campaigns Ambassador for Cancer Research UK. She didn’t travel to London asking for pity. She came armed with facts, with local stories from our community and with a simple message: our people deserve better.
We had a blunt, honest conversation about what’s really happening. Chloe spoke about the fear gripping families told they might wait weeks for a diagnosis. About how early detection can mean the difference between life and death. About life-saving research that often feels out of reach for ordinary, hardworking families. About the compassionate care every patient deserves, no matter where they live.
Our NHS was built on the principle that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Yet we’ve all seen our proud NHS pushed to the brink: growing waiting lists, overstretched staff doing their best, that gnawing sense the system is creaking. Frankly, that’s not good enough for a disease touching so many lives in our community.
Chloe’s dedication to forcing Parliament to listen to real people is inspiring. I’m taking her message and the voices of everyone here affected by cancer, directly into the heart of government. It’s time we got the healthcare system we deserve.
We need faster diagnoses, better treatment access and continued research investment. We need an NHS that treats every patient with urgency and dignity. Cancer doesn’t discriminate between a family in Headless Cross and one in London. Neither should our healthcare.
