A MAJOR conservation project at one of Warwickshire's most significant historic houses has won a prestigious regional award, and will now compete at a national final later this year.
The Through the Roof project at Coughton Court, near Alcester, was named winner in the heritage category at the RICS Awards 2026 West Midlands ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency in Birmingham on June 26.
The project involved an extensive conservation programme at the Grade I listed Tudor house.
Led by Oliver Architecture, the work carried out roof and façade repairs to protect the building's historic fabric, interiors and collections — including the rare Tabula Eliensis.
Traditional materials and techniques were used throughout to restore the building's integrity, improve its resilience to future climate impacts and discreetly enhance thermal performance.
A public interpretation programme also ran alongside the physical work, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about the process of conserving a historic building.
Commenting on the Through the Roof project, the judges said: “Excellent project involving sympathetic restoration of an incredibly valuable heritage property.
"Good sustainability and use of original materials wherever possible and innovative solutions to some challenging aspects.”
The win means the project will now go forward to represent the West Midlands at the RICS UK Grand Final on October 22.
