FAMILIES are being urged to take precautions when visiting petting farms and animal attractions.
Redditch Borough Council issued the reminder ahead of the Easter holidays, highlighting the risk of infectious diseases that can be spread through contact with animals, their droppings, food, or contaminated surfaces.
Councillor Jane Spilsbury, portfolio holder for performance, engagement and governance, said: "Visiting an animal petting experience can be a fun and educational experience for a young child.
"To maximise enjoyment, a few easy precautions can help families enjoy the day while staying protected from any illnesses, as well as spreading them."
Symptoms of infection may include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and body aches.
Young children, pregnant women, older people and those with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to severe illness.
The council advised visitors not to touch their face or eat and drink while around animals.
Hands should be washed thoroughly with warm water and liquid soap after contact with animals or surfaces.
Hand gels and wipes are not a substitute, as they do not remove bugs in dirt.
Young children should be supervised and shoes, pushchairs, and wheelchairs should be cleaned after the visit.
Clothing should be washed at 60°C for at least 30 minutes.
