Glover Street in Redditch plan for four new bungalows

The application, which was submitted to Redditch Borough Council, would see four new bungalows built at unit 1 Glover Street. 

The site is a detached two-storey industrial unit benefiting from a large warehouse, substantial storage space, partitioned offices and a small yard area to the rear and side.  

The applicant said the proposed development will provide "specialised residential care for children with learning disabilities and autism". 

In the planning statement, the applicant said: "The two bungalows located towards the front adjacent to Glover Street are intentionally designed with gable forms that echo the silhouette of the existing industrial building’s gable ends.

"This provides a subtle architectural reference to the site’s former use, maintaining the sense of continuity and identity.  

"Central open space is designed between the bungalows, which serve as a shared courtyard and garden area. This provides valuable amenity space for residents and introduces a welcoming communal element to the scheme."

According to the plans, the bungalows will have four bedrooms and all bedrooms will include a wheelchair turning circle to allow for greater independence and comfort for children requiring assistance with mobility. 

Each bungalow will accommodate one child as well as providing facilities for staff. 

The applicant added: "These homes are intended to foster a safe, nurturing space that promotes independence and personal development, ensuring that each child has the necessary levels of care and support."

There have been mixed reactions to the plans on the planning portal with some saying they supported the redevelopment of the site whilst others raised concerns over parking. 

Supporting the application, Mohammed Imad said: "It is encouraging to see investment directed toward helping people live with dignity and stability."

Adhnaan Arif added: "The proposed demolition of the old, deteriorating building presents an exciting opportunity to revitalise our neighbourhood. Replacing it with four newly built bungalows would not only uplift the aesthetics of the area but also bring in fresh energy and modern design that complements the community's charm."

Objector S Begum said: "Glover Street, like much of Smallwood, is heavily congested with traffic. Parking is difficult on most days let alone allowing for more vehicles to park on the street."

G Hussain added: "Opposite the proposed site is quite a large children's playground area, which during the summer months is bustling with children. Allowing more traffic will result in safety issues for the children and families who use the play area."
