A Tolkien author is coming to Redditch as part of a campaign to 'Save The Shire'.

Campaigners against a proposed 287-acre power station in the Worcestershire countryside, which inspired Tolkien’s ‘The Shire’, have organised an event this month.

Andrew H. Morton has been invited by the Roundhill Wood Solar Farm opposition group (RWSF) and is expected to read extracts from his book, as well as take part in a Q&A session.

Phil Coathup, RWSF chairman said: "It’s clear from reading Andrew’s books that Tolkien had a close relationship with the Worcestershire countryside."

He further shared that the audience will be intrigued to learn about the influence of Tolkien’s Aunt Jane Neave, who resided at Dormston Manor, colloquially known as ‘Bag End,’ - the same name given to the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Andrew H. Morton said: "There has long been speculation about the origin and meaning of the name Bag End and its significance to Tolkien."

He emphasised the importance of protecting the picturesque setting which features in much of Tolkien’s work.

The author’s visit is slated for Friday, March 22 at 7.30pm in Stock & Bradley Village Hall in Bradley Green.
