A new CCTV camera has been installed in a popular park in Redditch following a spate of antisocial behaviour.

The temporary camera was set up at Arrow Valley Country Park following the outcome of a consultation on whether it could help combat poor behaviour and vandalism.

The consultation was organised earlier this year by Redditch Borough Council with the support of West Mercia Police after residents raised concerns.

Of the 213 responses form residents and visitors to the park, 80 per cent strongly agreed and 11 per cent agreed that CCTV in the park was a good idea with only 7 per cent disagreeing.

Councillor Lucy Harrison said: "Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey. It was very clear that the public were in favour of trying this approach to combat antisocial behaviour and vandalism.

"I hope that the trial is successful and leads to a permanent fixture so that everyone can enjoy the park safely in the way it was intended."

The camera works by using the mobile data network to send real-time images to the Monitoring Centre which is operational 24/7 and CCTV is proactively reviewed by trained and licensed staff.

The images from the camera are recorded and can be reviewed when an incident happens with live images sent to police HQ.

The camera works in low light to pick up people using the play equipment in the dark and will be in place for the next three months.

Leader of Redditch Borough Council, Matt Dormer, said: "I hope that the new camera does its job and deters this criminal behaviour so that Arrow Valley Park remains an enjoyable space for everyone and isn't spoilt by a minority.

"As a council, we are listening to the concerns of residents and taking action to enhance the safety of our community."
