A FUNDRAISER has been launched to help give a late community champion the 'send-off she deserves'.

Nettie Lloyd, a founding member of Redditch's Church Hill Big Local charity, has been described as a "great supporter" of her community.

She was also involved with the Redditch Older Peoples Forum, Mendip House Residents Association, Redditch Labour Group, and was a supporter of the 'Save the Alex' campaign.

Before the 76-year-old passed away in June, she was "unable to put her affairs in order" and would only be entitled to a public health funeral arranged by the local authority.

A JustGiving page has now been set up by Alex McGowan of St. Andrew's Methodist Church, Church Hill Big Local and Bill Hartnett, ward councillor for Church Hill.

They said: "Some of you have reached out and asked how you can help.

"Please note that your kindness and support is much appreciated.

"We kindly ask you, if you are able, to donate funds towards the funeral service (including flowers, a wake etc) as we hope to give Nettie the send-off she would have wanted and deserves.

"Thank you again for supporting us during this time and we hope to see you at the service".

More than £500 has been raised so far. People can donate via JustGiving.

The funeral will be held at Redditch Crematorium on August 24 at 9.30am.

The wake will be held at St. Andrew's Methodist Church.

Councillor Hartnett said: "The generosity in the first 24 hours has been tremendous. We are overwhelmed.

"She was really really joyous and friendly. She was an integral part of her community. She was loved by everybody".

Cash donations can also be given to The Way Café at St. Andrews Church on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays between 10am and 1pm.

Alternatively, donations can be given to Krafty Sew ‘n’ Sew Craft Group on Tuesdays between 1pm and 3pm.
