CHILDREN at an inadequate nursery in Redditch ‘do not make good enough progress’ according to Ofsted.

The education watchdog visited The Learning Nursery on Beoley Road West on November 28 and found all areas inspected to be inadequate.

The report which was published earlier this month, says that there is a risk 'some child protection concerns and allegations might not be managed effectively’ and some staff 'have insufficient safeguarding knowledge’.

The owners of the nursery told The Advertiser they have addressed Ofsted’s concerns following the inspection.

Ofsted inspectors found that children attending the nursery with SEND or those who speak English as an additional language do not ‘receive appropriate support’.

The report notes: “As a result, some children struggle with the curriculum on offer, which they demonstrate through occasionally being unsettled or unenthused by the activities planned.

“The provision for children with SEND is not good enough.

“Staff do not always recognise potential additional needs quickly enough.

“Managers are not familiar with children's needs and what support is required.

“Children who speak English as an additional language receive ineffective interactions that do not further their vocabulary.

“For example, staff ask these children questions that are over complicated or fail to differentiate the learning for them.”

The report also notes that managers do not have appropriate oversight of the whole nursery and there isn’t always a staff member on-site with a pediatric first aid certification.

Steve Watson and Donna Villa, owners of The Learning Nursery said: “We were most disappointed with our recent Ofsted report, as one out of date first aid certificate triggered these inadequate judgements.

“Subsequently we have ensured that all first aid certificates are up to date and addressed all other concerns.

“We are grateful for the ongoing support we are receiving from our parents and  we expect to receive a Good judgement at our re-inspection later this Spring.”
