WALKING footballers from Worcestershire have been stepping out in force to such an extent that the game is now becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.

The game is open to both men and women over the age of 50 and as the name suggests, running is strictly banned!

Consequently walking makes the game low impact with little risk of injury.

Worcestershire’s Oncology’s Walking Football Club - known locally as WOW, have become so established that they are now celebrating their fifth birthday.

They meet every month for training sessions and have recently competed in competitive fixtures against Sky Blues Macmillan Walking Footballers from Coventry and Bromsgrove Walking Football group, who are part of Bromsgrove’s Walking Sports Centre.

Most games are played on state of the art artificial pitches which help reduce the risk of pain, discomfort and injury.

WOW was formed by radiographers Daniel Bloomer and Richard Cormie to help support patients in Worcestershire as they undergo or recover from treatment.

The team meet on the last Friday of each month at Perdiswell Leisure Centre from 11am to noon.

But such is the growing demand for walking football, they plan to meet bi-monthly from September and would welcome any new players to join them.
