WORCESTER is among one of the top ten best UK cities for a staycation.

According to a recent survey by Which? Worcester is number seven in the top ten list for medium cities and towns to visit for a staycation.

Councillor Lucy Hodgson, chair of Worcester City Council's place & economic development committee, outlined an unusual reason that we have seen an increase in tourists this year.

She said that Worcester is benefitting from a rise in popularity of "experimental accommodation" such as narrowboats, staying in yurts or arriving with a train experience companies as part of a longer journey.

Cllr Hodgson added: “It’s fantastic to see Worcester doing so well in Which’s survey and it reflects the fact that our city is an increasingly popular destination for tourists, both from the UK and overseas.

"Accommodation providers in the city, especially those offering self-catering, have been very busy throughout this summer and we are seeing a lot of international visitors.

“Worcester City Council works closely with partners – including Worcester BID, Severn Arts and the County Council – to promote the city as a tourist destination, and in recent years we have developed the Visit Worcester brand and secured the city’s presence on the DSCVR smartphone app, that gives visitors all the information they need at their fingertips.

“Our city’s excellent programme of events helps raise its profile across the year.

"2022 has been particularly strong, with thousands of people enjoying the Worcester Show, Elgar Festival, the Carnival, Tom Jones at Pitchcroft, the popular monthly High Street markets, Light Night Worcester and much more besides.

“And the great news is that there’s still plenty to come in 2022, including next month’s Worcester Music Festival and Worcester Paint Festival.

“All this has led to an increase in demand at the Tourist Information Centre, based at the Guildhall, so we are – for the first time – opening it on Sundays over the summer, a move that is proving to be very popular.”
