A SCHOOL in Redditch has been told to improve by inspectors after high numbers of exclusions and suspensions.

Woodfield Academy on Studley Road has been rated ‘Requires Improvement’ by Ofsted after their most recent inspection in June.

The school, which teaches children between the ages of nine and 13, was previously rated ‘Good’ at its last ‘short inspection’ in 2017.

The education watchdog found the number of suspensions and permanent exclusions to be high.

Their report said: “Leaders have begun to take action to reduce these; however, some pupils miss too much learning. Leaders should review the strategies that they use to improve behaviour to reduce the number of suspensions in the school."

The report also notes that teachers do not always “present key information clearly or check pupil’s understanding systematically.”

It adds: “This means that misconceptions arise and are not always addressed. Leaders should make sure that teachers deliver information effectively and check that pupils understand what they are learning."

However, students at Woodfield Academy treat each other with respect and feel safe.

Pupils also "benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities which include sport, art, film club, archery and Quidditch.”

The current headteacher, Neil Straw, joined the school last September before the school became part of the Bordesley Multi Academy Trust in April.

In a letter to parents, Mr Straw wrote: “Since September we have had a new headteacher, senior leaders, chair of governors and joined a Multi Academy Trust.

“Woodfield Academy has a new direction, and its development is in its infancy, but it was exciting to put across to Ofsted our plans and they agreed with us that the future is very positive.

“As leaders we are very aware that it takes time to create the right culture, but the school community has the potential to help us on our journey and to achieve the very best for our pupils.”
