A SCHOOL in Redditch has confirmed it will close on Monday and Tuesday due to the Met Office’s extreme heat warning.

Tenacres First School will be closed due to ‘health and safety concerns’ for children and staff in the predicted extreme heart that is set to grip the UK next week.

A school trip for Year 3 has also been cancelled along with a graduation ceremony for their reception pupils.

The Met Office has issued its first-ever red extreme heat warning for the UK with temperatures likely to hit the high 30s and even reach 40 degrees in some areas.

A statement on Tenacres First School website reads: “Following the rapid escalation of the temperatures forecast for Monday and Tuesday the decision has been taken by myself and the Governing Body to close Tenacres due to Health and Safety concerns and considering it is the UK’s first ever red warning for extreme heat.

“Monday’s temperatures rapidly rise during the morning and Tuesday the day is due to start in the mid-20s and again increase.

“Regarding the Year 3 trip this will not go ahead, and I will update parents early next week regarding all with this trip.

“Regarding the Reception Graduation, I will update parents should rescheduling this be a possibility.

“This decision has not been taken lightly but my absolute priority is the welfare of both children and staff.”
