A REDDITCH hockey veteran who led a Great British team to bronze success, has been presented with a cap for his achievements in the sport.

Brian Disbury joined Redditch Hockey Club in October 1969 and played for the Midlands and Worcestershire squads before being called up to play for England in 1974.

He then played for the GB squad in 1975, toting up 8 caps in the year.

Brian’s success doesn’t stop there – in 1984 he was assistant manager to arguably one of Redditch’s most famous Hockey players, Roger Self who led the GB team to a bronze medal in Los Angeles.

As part of a project by The Hockey Museum, all GB hockey players have been presented with a material cap detailing their debut date and the number of caps achieved.

Brian, aged 71, said: “The number 176 on the cap means I was the 176th man to play hockey for Great Britain – how amazing.

“However, the debut date is wrong, so I need to get that changed!”

During and after Brian’s hockey career, he remained good friends with Roger Self and his family.

Roger sadly passed away in 2017 but his wife Hilary presented Brian with his cap.

Brian, father of two and grandfather of two said: “Roger was my Hockey mentor, we talked hockey together.

“I felt a lot of pride when being given my cap.

“In 1975 I either trained or played every day that year.”

Brian stopped playing club hockey when he was around 32 years old and stopped playing recreationally at 55 years old.

The Hockey Museum has presented 550 caps to those who have played Hockey for the GB team.

In the next few years, The Hockey Museum will be tracing all those that played Hockey for England meaning Brian will be presented with another cap commemorating his 12 caps for the country.
