Distinguished Gentleman's Ride for Movember sees Evesham bikers take part

120 motorcycle riders dressed in their tweeds met up in Evesham to take part in this year’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR).

The Worcestershire group joined more than 90,000 riders in over 800 cities across 104 countries as they took to the roads on Sunday.

Organiser of the Evesham ride, Peter Myers, said: “What a fantastic turnout for well-deserving causes.

“The DGR has once again lived up to its name of being the biggest motorcycle event in the world!

“Together for Movember, we have raised $5.5 million, and counting, to help improve the lives of men all around the world.”

The DGR was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa in 2012, inspired by a photo of TV show Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit.

The event aims to raise money and awareness for men’s mental health and prostate cancer.

Mr Myers decided to launch the Evesham edition in 2019, after seeing the success of rides in Birmingham, Coventry and Oxford.

In total, the Evesham ride raised more than £16,000.

The local group set off from Hampton Ferry on Sunday, May 22, taking a scenic route through the Cotswolds en route to Broadway High Street.

Speaking before this year’s event, Mr Hawwa said: “The event this year is looking to bring this wonderful community together again, and in full force.

“We have worked to ensure we have more rides operating around the world, so that we can celebrate this new decade of the DGR.”

Ahead of this year’s ride, Mr Hawwa announced the partnership with men’s health charity, Movember, had been extended for a further five years.

Michelle Terry, CEO of Movember, said: “Over the last decade, we have watched the DGR grow from strength to strength and Movember has been privileged to be the event’s official charity partner since 2016.

“Movember is working towards a world where men of all ages understand what mental health is, what they need to do to manage their wellbeing and feel comfortable asking for support when they need it.

“The support of our DGR community will help us to further develop digital tools such as Movember Conversations and Movember’s Family Man, which help support men during key stages of their lives.”
