A PLAN to build a new Aldi in Alcester has been withdrawn.
An application was submitted by the supermarket giant to Stratford District Council last year to build a store on the former Broad Lane Leisure caravan centre off Birmingham Road in Kings Coughton.
Along with the store, the plan included access to Birmingham Road, car parking and a servicing area.
The initial planning application stated that the scheme would “increase competition with the town’s food retail sector, reducing residents’ need to travel to the likes of Stratford-upon-Avon, Evesham and Redditch for their weekly food shopping trip.”
The scheme would also “reinvigorate a prominent road side site and help maintain continued investment and jobs within the local area”, planning documents state.
The application was withdrawn by Aldi on January 5.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “We have decided to focus our efforts on looking for a more viable site for our new Alcester store and will keep the community updated on any further developments.”
