TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular figure in the Redditch horse riding community who has passed away.

Raymond Whitby was a much-loved figure in the horsing world and taught generations of youngsters in the town how to ride ponies through his riding school.

Mr Whitby died on October 17 aged 66-years-old following a short illness.

Emma Temple-Worgan first met Mr Whitby aged ten-years-old when she first began pony riding lessons and remained friends with her teacher for the rest of his life.

Paying tribute to her friend and mentor, Emma said: “He’s a bit of a local legend. For over 40 years he had been at the riding school and helped so many children to ride ponies and have access to them.

“A lot of us have formed lifelong friendships through him and through the yard. I don’t think he realised how many people he helped.

“He was lovely and was keen that ponies were accessible and affordable for children so they had that opportunity.”

The riding school and yard, known as Bentley and District, has been based at various places in the Redditch area over the years but Mr Whitby remained a constant presence.

He even inspired and supported Emma as she pursued her love of horses into a career.

The 46-year-old added: “Raymond has been a lifelong friend to me. I started a career in horses and that was down to Ray, he was always on hand to help.

“I’ve been quite amazed how many people have been in touch. He has touched so many people’s lives and I don’t think he knew that. I’ve had messages from generations of people from every stage of his life.”

Emma is now helping to raise funds to cover the costs of Mr Whitby’s funeral and has asked for any donations to be made to the Thomas Brothers funeral directors.

Any extra money donated will be given to charity.
