The REDDITCH Local History Museum group have submitted a planning application to change the use of its site in the town centre from retail to to museum, meaning opening plans are firmly storming ahead.

Its secured site, at 5 Market Place will be home to a new Redditch museum focusing on all aspects of local history.

The shop has been vacant for three years and the group hope the museum will be open to the public within two months time.

The museum group has raised just under £30,000 after launching a campaign to preserve a treasure trove of artefacts in danger of disappearing.

Since its formation in 2009, the Redditch Local History Society has been collecting artefacts and memorabilia reflecting the town's history.

Over this time, several collections from local historians have been lost. The society says their archives are currently stored in less than ideal conditions and they urgently need secure storage.

The idea for a museum came to light to help with the preservation of these historic Redditch artefacts for future generations.
