A HAMMER-wielding robber who attacked a pawnbrokers shop in Dudley has been jailed for more than six years after police traced him though blood found on a shard of glass.

Clayton Hyde raided Harvey & Thompson Pawnbrokers in Wolverhampton Street on January19, 2019, and made off with around £10,000 in cash, gold and jewellery.

CCTV shows him bursting into the shop at 11.30am armed with a lump hammer and meat cleaver − alongside an accomplice who was carrying a machete and iron bar − before shattering a glass security screen.

However, as Hyde, from Smith Street in Dudley, grabbed valuables he cut himself on the smashed glass − allowing forensics to seize a DNA sample that returned a hit to the 44-year-old, who was on prison release licence at the time.

Hyde went on to admit robbery and possession of an offensive weapon and was jailed at Wolverhampton Crown Court for six years and 10 months.

Upon his eventual release he will be subject to an extended licence of period of three years due to being deemed a dangerous offender by the courts.

Detectives from West Midlands Police continue to appeal for information about the other person who is believed to have been involved in the crime.
