WORCESTER News readers railed against the prospect of vaccination passports being required for day-to-day domestic pleasures such as popping out for a pint.

The prospect has been a hot topic since the Covid-19 immunisation programme has accelerated, particularly with scientists warning mass vaccination will still not lead to swift lifting of all coronavirus restrictions.

Prime minister Boris Johnson insisted he would not be in favour of vaccination passports within the UK, inferring that they could be requirement for overseas travel in the future but that rapid testing would be his preferred option.

He did stop short of scotching the idea altogether, though, confirming the government would “look at everything” when it came to reopening businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector.

And the idea that individuals need to prove they have had the jab to gain entry to establishments has gone down like a lead balloon with most of our respondents.

On Facebook, Mandy Morris said: “Completely ludicrous. So if you don’t/can’t have a vaccine, potentially you can’t visit a supermarket if such a system was to be introduced ... but you can now!?!

“Are people to be starved into submission? Just when you think things couldn’t possibly be more mad!

“And still they don’t know if the vaccine actually works, and it is already acknowledged that it won’t work for everyone who takes it anyway. So then what?”

Paige Boland commented: “They better make it available to everyone quicker then.”

Steve Vernum added: “What about the people who CANNOT have the jab because of medical reasons?”

On the prospect of vaccination passports, the prime minister said: “I think inevitably there will be great interest in ideas like can you show that you had a vaccination against Covid in the way that you sometimes have to show you have had a vaccination against yellow fever or other diseases in order to travel somewhere.

“I think that is going to be very much in the mix down the road, I think that is going to happen.

“What I don’t think we will have in this country is – as it were – vaccination passports to allow you to go to, say, the pub or something like that.”

  • What do you think of vaccination passports for travel or domestic pleasures, such as going to the pub?
