TRIBUTES by their hundreds have poured in since the news of the sudden death of Redditch sporting legend Jimmy Moran at the age of 57.

The boxing Gold Medal winner at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 was highly respected in the town, and there are calls for a memorial in his honour, including suggestions of a pair of golden boxing gloves.

The "true gentleman" died on Monday morning at his Enfield home and news quickly spread on social media.

There are now more than 450 tributes to him on the Redditch Past and Present Facebook page.

One person wrote: "Just found out this legend of a man who I had the pleasure of knowing has passed away. He lived his life the way he wanted and in some people’s eyes they will say a wasted talent, but in my eyes he was a legend of a boxer and a true gentleman. And he put Redditch on the boxing map. I will miss you. My thoughts go out to all the family. RIP Jimmy James Moran."

Another comment read: "I also knew Jimmy and saw him box once, he won of course, he had serious success, he chose to live his life his way. I know we all saw a lot more successes in store for him,but regardless, he was a gentleman, sweet and kind. Condolences to his family. He was a legend.”

Another person wrote: "He played football for Redditch YC in the 70s and so I had the pleasure of playing against him a few times. Always struck me as an all round good lad. RIP Jimmy."
