PARENTS at a Kidderminster school are campaigning for a crossing to be installed at a busy junction "before someone is hurt or killed".

Concerned parents at Franche Community Primary School say there have been several near misses with people crossing the Habberley Road, near to the junction with St John's Avenue and Manor Avenue, and claim the poor visibility caused by a bend in the road is an "accident waiting to happen".

Erin Galloway, who is leading the campaign to get a crossing installed on the road, struggles daily getting two young children to and from school.

She said: “Habberley Road is a notoriously busy road. I have witnessed many near misses myself, and my concern is not only for the parents crossing with young children, but also older children who may cross alone.

"I sometimes stand and wait for a considerable time before the flow of traffic reduces enough for me to safely cross.

"A crossing would not only reduce this waiting time but would also ensure a safe point for all to get across risk free.”

District councillor and Franche Primary School parent Anna L’Huillier said: "I use this route daily walking my youngest daughter to and from school. The visibility when crossing towards Habberley is so limited I’ve had to literally drag my daughter across at times.

"You often have to run to avoid an accident, and for those escorting young children home, or for anyone slightly less mobile it is simply an accident waiting to happen.

"It’s time to get this sorted before someone is hurt or killed. Too often, councils wait until after a serious accident before reviewing these sort of concerns, but that is not good enough when lives are at risk.

Councillor L'Huillier says the road had a crossing assistant until the relocation of Knoll School in 2017.

A petition set up calling on the county council to urgently address the issue has been signed by 400 people.

A spokesperson from Worcestershire County Council said: “The petition was bought to our attention by the Local Member and we understand the concern for this section.

"A survey has been requested and once undertaken will identify what actions can be considered.”
