THEY are eloquent, persuasive, believable and ruthless – they are out to take as much as they can from you.

These are the cold callers who aren’t what they seem, the bogus officials who want the chance to talk you into parting with your money.

While there are many instances when a cold caller might be genuine, police are urging people to follow their advice to ensure they don’t get scammed.

Some scammers can be so utterly convincing you can be convinced into paying thousands – even tens of thousands of pounds – to these professional conmen.

So police have put together a foolproof system of keeping the conmen at bay.

They have even talked to a reformed burglar to find out the tricks they use.

Here is your anti-scammers safety list if a stranger calls at your door (and pass it on to friends, family and neighbours):

• . Check who it is by using the spy or look through a front window.

• Always put the chain on before you open the door.

• If you don't know the caller, ask to see their identity card. Check it carefully, and keep the chain on while you do this.

• If you're still not sure, ask the caller to come back later. You can then check their story by phoning the organisation or company they claim to represent.

• Ensure your back door is locked.

• Watch out for anyone who says they're in a hurry. Don't let them pressure you.

• If you have any suspicions at all, remember you don't have to let them in!

• Don't exchange cash on the doorstep.

• If you're still not happy, call the police n a non emergency using 101 or in a emergency dial 999 and tell us what's happened.
