People across Dudley borough who want to help support their local shops through lockdown are being offered a special online service.

Small and independent shops in local high streets can sign up to a ‘virtual Christmas market’ where they can promote special offers, local products and unique gifts.

People can then order goods to be delivered or can use a click and collect option.

Normally a ‘Small Business Saturday’ event encourages people to shop local in the run-up to Christmas and gives a boost to small and independent retailers up against large national businesses.

But with the new lockdown Dudley Council has launched the digital market idea to try to ensure that people can still ‘Stay Local, Support Local.’

It’s free for businesses to register and Dudley Council’s Business First team will be able to help.

It will allow residents choosing to shop online to shop local and support their high street knowing 100% of the profits will go to the store holders.

Councillor Ian Kettle, cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, said: “This year it’s more important than ever that we support those businesses who have worked hard during the pandemic to stay open, provide essentials and support Dudley communities.

“While we still encourage people to visit our town centres safely, I’m really pleased we’re also able to offer an online alternative, giving people the opportunity to support their local high street from the comfort of their own home.

“ I would urge anyone planning to shop online to browse our virtual market first and foremost once it goes live.”

The market is expected to go live on November 9 and will be available at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/markets/dudley-christmas-market
