A WOMAN from Stourport completed her own Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk on her mobility scooter to raise money in honour of her mother-in-law who suffers from the disease.

Marlene Turner, aged 63, took on the three-mile challenge with her friend Lynne Carreras and dog Wilma on Sunday, after the official event - due to be held in Birmingham - was cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions.

The two friends hoped to raise £100 for the Alzheimer's Society in honour of Marlene's 89-year-old mother-in-law Mary Turner, but managed to collect an impressive £250 in sponsors for the charity.

Marlene, who lives in Areley Kings, said: "It was absolutely brilliant. We set off at 10.45am with all the balloons tied to my mobility scooter.

"We went round the park and down the high street and down to the bandstand at the Memorial Park then came back.

"Wilma the dog had a good time and got lots of attention."

She added: "We did the walk for our mum who has full blown dementia – she hasn't known who we are or where she is for five years. It's a terrible illness.

"She is cared for by the wonderful people at Summerdyne Care Home in Bewdley."
