A PROPOSAL for new a food store on Birmingham Road in Alcester could create up to 50 new jobs for local people.

Aldi has confirmed that it is still committed to investing in the town and has submitted its plans to Stratford-on-Avon District Council.

The proposals would see the Broad Lane Leisure site on Birmingham Road redeveloped with a food store, associated car parking and new landscaping throughout.

The plans represent a £5m investment in the town and aim to improve local choice and competition whilst alleviating pressure on the already busy store in Studley.

It is thought that a new store in Alcester would also reduce through traffic from Alcester to Studley.

Prior to submitting its planning application, Aldi wrote to over 2,000 local properties and invited them to attend a virtual public exhibition of the plans.

Hundreds of residents viewed the plans and submitted their feedback with 70 per cent stating that they supported a new store in this location.

Simon Glover, Aldi’s Property Director said: “We’re encouraged by the positive response from the local community. It is clear that many people in the local community would like to see Aldi invest in Alcester. Our plans would create up to 50 direct jobs at the new store for local people, as well as supporting further opportunities through construction and the supply chain.

“Alcester has been a priority for Aldi for some time now and we’re really keen to invest in the town. We believe that this proposal would reduce pressure on our already busy Studley store, improving local choice and boosting the regional economy as well as reducing the need for people to travel.”
