INTREPID fundraisers set off on a 162-mile cycle ride a cross four counties to raise money for a North East charity this morning.

The 19 riders are taking part in Ride Infinity, which aims to raise £10,000 for the North East Autism Society (NEAS).

They set off from the charity’s headquarters in Chester-le-Street, en route to Penrith where they will stay overnight before cycling back in a route that forms the shape of the charity’s infinity loop logo.

The riders include NEAS chief executive John Phillipson who said: “It’s been a tough time for all charities so we’re really grateful to everyone taking part, as well as the sponsors, for supporting us in this way.”

Tony Smith is taking part after having the top of his hair shaved off in return for a generous donation from his employer, events management company Newsubstance.

“I stupidly announced that whoever gave me the biggest donation could choose my hair style for the ride,” said Tony.

The ride is being sponsored by Gama Systems, BGL, Leathers, Cleardata, Activa, and Challenge Northumberland.
