It's 1974 – the year when Manchester United were relegated from the Football League First Division and when a four-door Lada 1200 saloon would set you back £999.
And on the home front our random dip in the photo archives has come up with the 1974 Carlisle Flower Show, which as always was about so much more than brilliant blooms, with eye-watering onions (in every sense) and racks of home-made wines awaiting the judges' eye.
