A FORMER nightclub in the town centre that was used as a multimillion-pound cannabis farm is set to be turned into apartments.

Warrington Borough Council has granted planning permission for Club Wired, on Mersey Street, to be turned into 12 flats.

The council previously approved plans for the bar to be turned into 10 apartments in 2018.

But the latest proposals have seen the ambitions of the development expanded, and include a two-storey extension to the building.

It will comprise of five one-bedroom flats and seven two-bedroom units.

And council consent for this fresh scheme was granted on Friday, July 3.

The nightclub, which has stood vacant for more than seven years, was raided by Cheshire Police in 2015.

A cannabis farm worth as much as £6m was found inside, with three men from Vietnam later jailed for 12 years in connection with the grow.

Submission documents described the plot as now being a ‘blot on the surrounding area’.
