SPEEDING jet skiers travelling too close to swimmers have been warned to take safety more seriously.

Police said most skiers are behaving responsibly but urged them to "have a word with friends" who are breaking the rules.

A spokesman for the Dorset Marine Policing Team said jet skiing is "fantastic both recreationally and commercially" but added: "A very small proportion of skiers are causing problems."

Problems have been reported in several areas including Christchurch, Mudeford and Swanage.

The spokesman added: "We’re calling on the vast majority of jet ski users out there who are responsible and safe to have a word with friends who may not be taking safety as seriously as they should.

"Any reports of dangerous use of any vessel should be reported to Dorset Police. Any DataTag or vessel names are a big help."
