GREEN fingered residents in Batchley are appealing for volunteers for their garden club.

Everything’s coming up roses for tenants at St David’s House and Queen’s Cottages, thanks to the appointment of a new activity and engagement worker, Gillian Talbot, who has helped them set up the club.

The residents will be working together to make a sensory area for all tenants to enjoy, once the weather gets better.

They plan to hold BBQs and outdoor activities as well as growing plants and a selection of herbs and vegetables to promote good nutrition and healthy living.

Due to the nature of extra care housing, many of the residents are unable to do the more difficult work involved with gardening.

So a call has gone out for people or businesses from the local community to help create an outdoor space by donating plants, vegetables and herbs, or offering their time to work on the garden itself.

Councillor Julian Grubb, whose portfolio covers community services, said: “We are really pleased to have Gillian on board and she already has an array of ideas to keep residents entertained and active.

"A beautiful garden is a work of heart and this community project certainly has a lot of that. It is a fantastic opportunity for all of the residents whether they are in the gardening club or just want to enjoy some time outdoors and it’s great that they want to get the wider community involved too."

Liz Griffiths, manager at St David’s House, said: “We had wonderful support last year from ‘Home Soil’, funded by Redditch Borough Council and led by local volunteer hub BARN, working in partnership with Redditch Community Shed and community gardener Alistair Waugh, who helped us plant and develop our garden area at St David’s House.

"We are so looking forward to doing more in the garden area and building on this.

"Tenants and staff would really appreciate volunteer support to help us make the most of our garden space. Spending time outside is rewarding and fun and enjoyed by all at St David’s House.”
