MILITARY veterans in Redditch are set to benefit from cut-price train travel following the launch of the UK’s first railcard for former servicemen and women.

Available from Armistice Day this year, the railcard will extend discounted train travel to the more than 830,000 veterans not covered by existing discounts.

It’s hoped the new railcard will help boost veterans’ job prospects and strengthen family bonds through cheaper travel.

In welcoming the new railcard, MP for Redditch, Rachel Maclean, said: "Discounted rail travel is the least we can do to support our veterans who have served this country with distinction and bravery. I know here in Redditch how proud we are of the 37 Signal Regiment.

“I have seen first-hand the sacrifices our servicemen and women make having spent time with them around the world as part of the Parliamentary programme.

“The action plan the Government has now published will support our veterans in a range of areas, from employment and skills to health and well-being, finance and housing. I will continue to support the Government in its aim to make the UK the best place in the world for veterans.”
