CONNOR Mooney is being backed to become City's third musketeer in the bid for double cup glory.

Mooney produced an effervescent display on his first City start, a 1-0 win at Tividale that secured a Midland Football League Cup quarter-final berth on Tuesday.

Drafted in last month after more than a year out of the game, the ex-Aston Villa youngster featured had gained just 28 minutes of senior action from two substitute appearances before playing at The Beeches.

But having excelled in flashes, manager Ashley Vincent reckons he has the right man to provide more competition for the role as City's chief creator.

“Connor is a fantastic footballer, neat and tidy and in the mould of Liam Lockett and Josh Willis,” said Vincent.

“We now have three of those attacking players who you’d consider as number 10s but can also play wide in a 4-3-3.

“What Connor needs is minutes, he had been out of the game for about 18 months prior to coming to us due to a shoulder reconstruction.

“As we saw that lack of game time started to tell after 60 minutes but on a really horrible pitch he found moments of quality and grafted for the team so I was really happy for him, as I was for a lot of the boys.”

It was no picnic for City with the breakthrough coming in 64th minute when Sean Brain put away the penalty that followed his cross being handled in the box.

“The boys were fantastic and showed a different side,” added Vincent.

“The pitch was horrible and conditions were not great but it was the same for both teams and we talked about that before the game.

“What we did was match what Tividale threw at us in tricky circumstances and as we have said all season, we have players with quality and we got the moments we were after.

“There were four or five good chances and their keeper was by far the man of the match for me, he made three or four fantastic saves and probably felt unfortunate to go home having been beaten.

“I am really pleased for the boys and we are into the next round. Winning is the best habit to have, it doesn’t matter where you go, who you play or in what competition.”

Next up for City is Saturday’s trip to second-placed Coventry United – the side Worcester ousted from the FA Vase last week – in the Midland Football League Premier Division (3pm).
