THERE has been a strong reaction to news that thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused to Redditch’s Christmas tree.

The Advertiser recently reported that photos shared online show a young man climbing up the tree - breaking parts off as he goes - being cheered on by onlookers.

Hundreds of people have shared the image, and commented with many admonishing the man.

Commenting on the Advertiser Facebook page many have called for the youths to be named and shamed.

Nana June said: "Some idiots just spoil it for everyone. Hope they are caught."

Ann Hawkins said: "Name and shame the hooligans plus their families. Print their addresses."

David Barry James said: "Bloody disgusting name and shame when caught and a hefty fine plus a spell behind bars for all of them."

Donna Sherriff said: "Not just the man they should all be arrested!"

Police in Redditch have confirmed that they are investigating.

A spokesman said: "Officers received a report from a member of the public that a young man was seen climbing the Christmas tree at the Kingfisher Centre around 4.30am on the morning of December 28. As a result of his activity considerable damage was caused to the tree and officers are investigating and working to identify the offender."

Anyone who recognises the people in the picture is being urged to call police on 101 quoting 0094S of 28 DECEMBER 2019.
