No-one can quite remember when the time piece which sits on top of Pizza Planet on Noel Lee Way stopped working, but it is believed to have been out of action for around ten or 11 years.

Resident Shirley Poole and Cam Parish Council were determined to see the clock set ticking again, and brought it to the attention of Pizza Planet’s owners.

Last month, scaffolding was erected on the building for maintenance repairs, and Pizza Planet manager Chris Law seized the opportunity to climb on the roof and take the clock apart.

“We took everything down from the roof and sent the mechanisms to a professional clock repairer,” he said.

“They fixed the mechanisms and sent them back. We cleaned all the parts then I climbed back up on the roof and put it all back together.

“I’m trained in mechanics, so it wasn’t difficult.

“It’s good to have it working again, and it’s nice to see it clean and tidy.”

The time piece was added to the building in memory of the Cam Mill clocktower, which was demolished in 1994.

It was hoped at the time that the Cam Mill clock could be incorporated into the new Co-op building, which was being erected at the time.

But the Cam Mill time piece proved to be too big for the new building.

However, in its memory, a new clock tower was added to the Co-op.

Since then the Co-op building was taken over by Pizza Planet.
