THE owner of Redditch's top fish and chip shop has said everything he does is for his customers.

Theo Ellinas from the Golden Carp on Matchborough Way was speaking after it was revealed the chippy was named as one of the UK’s top 10 takeaways.

The Golden Carp has been named as one of the UK’s best, in what is known as the Oscars of the industry.

The chippy is a finalist in the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, the flagship category in the 2020 National Fish & Chip Awards.

Organised by Seafish, the public body that supports the £10bn UK seafood industry, the awards are the UK’s premier awards for fish and chips businesses.

Theo, who also owns Winyates Chippy, said accolades are nice but not the reason he got into the business.

"It's fantastic news but this is not just about me, or the shop, even though it was team effort and every one of us is passionate about what we do," he said.

"This is for the customers. We're a local chippy and we try to make our customers proud."

Marcus Coleman, from Seafish, paid tribute to The Golden Carp, and the other finalists in this year's competition.

“These represent the best fish and chips on offer the UK today," he said

"They are consistently excelling across all areas and providing their customers with healthy, high quality fish and chips on every visit. Each of them is a credit to the industry and should be commended on the commitment they have shown to maintaining its fantastic reputation."

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony in London on January 23.
