INTERNET sensation Brad Maslen-Jones insists he meant the decisive 80-yard strike that won Evesham United’s friendly with Stratford Town on Monday.

The centre-half was waved back on after treatment and unleashed the mother of all lobs from the corner of his own 18-yard box.

His effort sailed in to the shock of everyone in the ground – including the former Peterborough United scholar and Hull City professional whose strike settled a 3-2 win for the Robins and the thousands of online viewers since.

“I was on the touchline because I had some treatment and was watching them play around at the back,” said Maslen-Jones, 21.

“The keeper was off his line and I have always thought about scoring from my own half but usually you never get the chance.

“When the ref waved me on I could see their lad was going to play that pass and I had only one intention.

“I never imagined it would drop just under the bar like it did but it was premeditated.

“I have not done it before and would like to think I could do it again but probably not.

“A few of the lads watched it back and said they could my eyes were clearly on the goal but a few of them were hating, saying it was just a big hoof.

“When it drops underneath the bar what can they say?

“Most of the stick came from the strikers but I think that was because I had to do their job for them!”

And while he would have preferred the stunner to have been in a game that mattered, Maslen-Jones reckons it will still have a positive impact for United.

“Getting three points would have meant more but pre-season is about building a winning mentality and that goal won us the game,” he added.

“We look in good shape and I was pleased to be able to add that so we can have that winning mindset going into the season.

“I have played under the gaffer (Carl Abbott) before and he is a great man manager.

“We are looking strong and starting to gel now after a few ropy and undeserved results in pre-season.

“We try to play from the back and get on the ball, no one hides away.

"I think if we keep playing the way we have in the past couple of games all season then we have a great chance of being right up there.”
