A man in his early forties has died in a crash that closed a North Yorkshire road for nearly six hours.

He was driving north along the A168 towards Thirsk yesterday evening.

Police have appealed for eye-witnesses and anyone with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward.

They confirmed late this evening that the man, who comes from York, had died, and that they were supporting his family.  

He was at the wheel of a black Vauxhall Insignia involved in a collision in roadworks on the A168 south of its junction with the A170 at about 6.45pm on Friday. 

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the car before the crash to contact them. 

They are also asking anyone who was travelling in the area at the time to check their vehicle dash-cams for footage that may assist the police.

The road was closed until shortly after midnight while police and emergency services dealt with the incident and carried out initial investigations.
