AT 6am the community of Alcester braved a biting wind and rain to pipe in the dawn at the beginning of the most important Remembrance Day in the Nations Calendar.

The chairman of the Alcester Branch of the Royal British Legion, Mike Gittus was accompanied by Piper Hurst, Alcester Town Crier Rory Duff and The Rev Adrian Guthrie.

Mike Gittus said: "Alcester is special town and I wasn't at all surprised to see such a wonderful turn out to start the day of remembrance in our community. We particularly acknowledged the the pipers' role in WW1 where they lead the men into battle and were slaughtered for their bravery."

The Queen attended a remembrance service at Westminster Abbey for those killed and wounded in conflict.

Earlier, millions of people joined in a two-minute silence at 11am GMT that marked the end of World War One on the 11th hour of 11 November 1918.

Prince Charles laid a wreath on behalf of the Queen at the Cenotaph in London.

More than 10,000 people - including veterans and relatives of WW1 soldiers - marched past the monument.
