A NEW couch to 5k course is starting in September offering novices the chance to take up running.
The popular running course, designed for absolute beginners, has seen many successes previously and will be starting new sessions from September 2, throughout the week and at various locations and times across the borough.
The weekly sessions are led by qualified run leaders and supported by the NHS, and include a series of downloadable podcasts designed to structure each run with music and coaching to develop running technique, speed and stamina progressively over time, as well as a companion smartphone app.
Councillor Mike Rouse, whose portfolio covers leisure and cultural services, said: “I struggle with a physical condition myself as well as having to work during the week, so the Sunday morning session is going to be ideal for me as the Abbey Stadium running track will reduce impact.”
He added: “Couch to 5K is popular, it works and we’re making it a sociable event.
"We are trying to suit as many people as possible with the various dates we have put on. If you want to get running but don’t know where to start just come down and we’ll make you feel very welcome.”

Sessions last approximately 45 minutes are PAYG at £1 per session.
