THE new Vision Express store has been opened in Tesco by an inspirational boy who was diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer.

Redditch's optical store on Coldfield Drive is one of more than 200 ‘Vision Express at Tesco’ outlets launching across the UK in 2018.

To mark the opening, the store invited Childhood Eye Cancer Trust ambassador Ethan Warman to perform the ribbon cutting.

Brave Ethan, three, from Bromsgrove, was just two years old when he was diagnosed with retinoblastoma (Rb), a rare and aggressive eye cancer.

His diagnosis was only spotted when his mum Michelle Turner noticed a white glow in his right eye, and took him to their local minor injuries clinic.

Two days after the diagnosis, Ethan had his right eye removed to save his life, and then two days after his second birthday, he started chemotherapy.

He now has regular check-ups as part of his recovery, and as part of his ambassadorial role he dropped by to the new Vision Express Redditch store to open the site.

Redditch store manager Charmaine Scaysbrook said: “Retinoblastoma is a condition we are very passionate about raising awareness of at Vision Express, so it was great to have Ethan and his family with us to help us unveil our new store in Tesco.

“We had a fantastic day celebrating the opening and with our state-of-the-art examining equipment, we’re looking forward to delivering an individual and thorough vision care service to current and new customers.”

Mum Michelle added: “Ethan is doing really well and is slowly learning that he is different, especially when we clean his artificial eye daily.

“My advice to parents is to get anything checked out if you’re the slightest bit concerned and if you’re still not happy then go again. We hadn’t heard of Rb before and we’re so glad we persisted with getting it checked out.”

The store showcases the chains re-brand, with a refreshed logo striking purple and green colour decor, bright sofas and wooden flooring.

The changes come after Vision Express acquired Tesco Opticians at the end of 2017.
