TRIBUTES have been paid to Alcester's first mayor Marion Cargill who recently passed away aged 92.

Mrs Cargill, who lived all her life in the town, died from old age on Tuesday, April 26.

She was known throughout Alcester as she served on Alcester Town Council and was made mayor- something which her family said she was always very proud of.

She was a lifelong member and president of the Women’s Institute.

Mrs Cargill was a member of the Royal British Legion and a poppy seller for many years. She was a regular churchgoer and was involved in many local organisations.

She served with the Women's Royal Naval Service during the war and it was during that time she met her future husband, David.

They were later married in St Nicholas' Church, Alcester.

She was born in Gas House Lane, Alcester, in December 1923 and lived much of her life on Malt Mill Lane.

Her son Mark Cargill, who is a former mayor himself and an Alcester Town and Stratford District Councillor, said: "She was a popular figure about town and always had a smile for everyone. Alcester was always at the centre of everything she did.

"She was well known for her community spirit and sense of duty. A true Alcestrian."

She also leaves behind a daughter, Deborah.

A funeral service will be held in St Nicholas' Church at 2.30pm on Friday, May 13.
