FIREWORKS will light up the skies around Alcester when the town hosts its annual St Nicholas Night celebrations.

The event, which is held annually on Sunday, December 6, will include a traditional market with stalls lining High Street selling food and gifts.

Following tradition, a boy Bishop of Alcester has been appointed to represent St Nicholas as part of the celebrations.

George Wren, aged 10, a pupil at St Nicholas' CE Primary School, is set to take up this role.

George will be assisted by three attendants Mia Tovey, Yasmin Reader, both 10, and Louise Stephens, aged 11.

A parade featuring the boy bishop, vintage vehicles and town organisations will be held at 5pm.

The market will open at 3.30pm with live music and entertainment from various local groups put on from 4pm and youngsters will be able visit Santa in his grotto during the event.

The event will reach its climax with a fireworks extravaganza at 7pm followed by a short service at St Nicholas' Church at 7.30pm.

Reverend Adrian Guthrie, the rector of Alcester Minster, said: “It’s a great event and most of the many town organisations are represented either with stalls or by doing various activities.

“It also marks the beginning of the lead up to Christmas,” he added.

The event is held to mark Saint Nicholas Day, as the town's main church is named after the saint, known as the bringer of gifts.
