ON Friday, February 21, the members of the Redditch Society, who meet at the Trinity High School, Grove Street, Redditch, were treated to a colourful evening presented by Simon Gulliver, the plant collection manager for the Botanical Gardens in Bimingham.

His talk was named Round the World in 80 Plants and it proved to be just so, with the members following Mr Gulliver on his travels.

We were transported from Moscow on the Trans-Siberian train across thousands of miles, then the Trans-Mongolian train across the Steppes of uninterrupted wasteland – which yet still managed to have some unusual flora.

We were then taken down the Yangtze River and onward into Vietnam, then to Sumatra and Krakatoa and all the way there Mr Gulliver found the most beautiful national flowers of these Far Eastern countries and also the most unusual fruit and nuts. A lovely evening altogether. On March 7, we have the talk entitled River Avon from Source to Severn and it will be given by Brian Draper MBE, who has spoken to the society many times. On March 21, we have Dr Chris Upton, senior lecturer in history at Newman College speaking on The Staffordshire Hoard. This should prove to be of great interest to many people, and all are most welcome to join us at 7.30pm at the Trinity High School, Redditch, on payment of £3 at the door.
