War time friendship leads to love

THIS is a truly memorable classic which leads us back to the beginning of World War Two.

With this backdrop of war, and shining alongside, we witness the heartfelt exploration of friendship, sacrifice and ultimately - love.

Paul Gallico captures it all - the mysterious marshes of Essex, the lonely lighthouse, the love of a young girl and the older deformed man who lives there with his paintings.

A man with a hunched back and a hand more akin to a claw. But nevertheless he is capable of painting, befriending the wildlife of the marshes and still proficient in sailing his small yacht.

Moving it is as the young girl becomes his regular visitor. She becoming less frightened, and developing a delightful friendship.

There’s sensitivity and eventually sadness when volunteers are called to assist as a rescuer at Dunkirk.

Rhys Harris-Clarke returns to the Festival Theatre stage following his performance in Alan Bennett’s A Chip in the Sugar in October. He is joined by Daniel Davis and Jennifer Thompson-Chatburn, who also began their acting careers with Malvern Theatres Young Company - they provide an excellent three-hander.

The production is directed by the Festival’s Nic Lloyd.

The running time is around 70 minutes (no interval) and entertaining and captivating for anyone aged 12+.
