THE M27 is set to remain closed until tomorrow.

The part of the motorway between junction 11 and junction 12 was closed shortly after 8.30am today after a crash involving a lorry caused fuel to spill across the carriageway.

Traffic was brought to a standstill and motorists were left queueing for hours.

Now Highways England has confirmed the motorway will remain closed for the rest of the day and all night to allow resurfacing works to be carried out.

Hampshire police said the collision involved a lorry but no-one was injured and no arrests were made.

Drivers are now urged to avoid the area and follow the diversion route.

In a statement Highways England said: "Road users travelling eastbound should follow the 'Hollow Circle' diversion symbol and exit the M27 at J11.

"Take the third exit and join the A27, continue along the A27 through Portchester and Portsbridge Interchange. Re-join the M27 at J12.

Road users are advised to allow additional time and consider alternative routes for their journey."
