SKIPPER Joe Leach says Worcestershire will have a great chance of sealing promotion and going up as champions if they play to their potential in the final Specsavers County Championship clash with Durham at New Road starting tomorrow (10.30am).

But Leach has stressed the importance of repeating what has been a main focus all season, winning the first session of the game.

Division Two leaders Worcestershire need a maximum of six points to clinch a fifth promotion in 11 years under director of cricket Steve Rhodes.

They will be attempting to fend off the challenge of second-placed Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire while 19 points will secure the title.

It would be the perfect way for Leach to sign off from his first campaign as first XI captain of the County in which he has led from the front with 63 Championship wickets in 13 games.

He said: “Our aim now is to win the final game and go up as champions.

“Obviously if you would have offered us this position at the start of the season then it’s fantastic knowing that if we win the game then we win the league.

“It is very pleasing and hopefully we can get over the line now and put in a performance.

“If we do our jobs and play to somewhere near our potential we are going to have every chance of not only getting promoted but going up as champions.”

Worcestershire have proved their worth against their main rivals, completing a double over Northamptonshire and winning at Notts.

Leach said: “I think with the win against Notts away and some of the performances we have put in during recent weeks, if we do manage to go up as champions no one can say we don’t deserve it.

“I don’t think we have done that for a significant period of time so it would be a big achievement.”

Worcestershire have had a 10-day break from action while nearest rivals Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire slugged it out at at Wantage Road.

Leach added: “We’ve had last week which has been a bit weird watching scorecards elsewhere that you can’t influence.

“Now we need to make sure on Monday morning at 10.30 we win that first session. That’s all we’ve focused on all year and if we do that then we will go from there.”

Worcestershire will be bidding to chalk up a fourth successive victory after opening up 2017 with four wins on the trot.
