WORCESTERSHIRE youngsters Jack Haynes and Xavier Clarke sparkled with the bat for the Midlands and North side against the London-South East and South West at Loughborough.

Opener Haynes scored 63 and Clarke struck 78 as the Midlands were dismissed for 224 in 81.1 overs after electing to bat in the best of the Bunburys match.

Their opponents reached 61-2 off 22 overs by the close of the first day with County paceman Matt Davis sending down four overs for 12 runs.

The trio were selected as a reward for their performances in the Under 15s Bunbury Festival last month at Radley College when representing the Midlands.

Haynes struck 11 boundaries in his 108-ball knock before he was fourth out at 95.

His dismissal brought Clarke, younger brother of County batsman Joe, to the middle and he hit nine fours in his 139-delivery innings before he was last out.

He shared in a fifth-wicket stand of 68 with D Mousley (36) but wickets then fell at regular intervals.

Haynes is a member of the County’s 2015-2016 academy intake, while Clarke is part of the satellite academy in Shropshire.

Davis is involved with the senior development of excellence programme, which sits just underneath the academy programme.

Worcestershire academy player Josh Haynes ended his involvement in the 2016 Super Fours on a successful note with another fine performance with the ball.

He skippered the Midlands in their third and fourth place play-off match against London and East at Loughborough.

He returned 2-27 from 10 overs out of a total of 281-6 from 50.

But there was no time for the Midlands to launch their reply before the heavens opened and the game was abandoned.

There was also a wicket for Worcestershire paceman Adam Finch, who finished with 1-35 in six overs.

The Midlands failed to retain their title but Josh Haynes also returned 2-29 against the South and West, scored 54 versus the North and finished with 2-38 against London and East.

The final between South and West and the North was also abandoned with the former side 179 all out from 46.3 overs.
